Where Should You Take the Kids?
Hey NYC nannies! We know the holiday season gets pretty wild in the city, but it’s also absolutely magical for our little ones. Here at Seaside Staffing Company, we’ve pulled together our favorite spots that’ll keep your kids wide-eyed with wonder while sneaking in some awesome learning moments.
The Polar Express Magic
Have you tried the NY Polar Express bus tour yet? Trust me, there’s nothing cuter than seeing your kiddos climb aboard in their PJs, clutching their tickets. Pro tip: read the book with them a few days before – they’ll get so excited spotting things from the story! It’s amazing to watch them connect the dots between what they’ve read and what they’re seeing.
The Rockettes Never Disappoint
Radio City during Christmas is just something else. Those high kicks still get me every time, and the kids? They’re absolutely mesmerized. One of our nannies told us her 4-year-old spent the whole next week practicing to be a Rockette. Who knows? Maybe you’re nurturing the next holiday star!
Skating at Rock Center
Okay, yes, it’s touristy, but hear me out – there’s something special about teaching a little one to skate under that massive tree. Sure, you might spend most of your time by the rails, but those first wobbly steps on ice? Priceless! Pack some hot cocoa in a thermos for after – they’ve earned it.
The Saks Light Show Spectacle
This one’s perfect for those early winter evenings when it gets dark at like, 4:30 (ugh). The light show at Saks is short enough to hold even toddlers’ attention, and the older kids love trying to figure out how they make it all work. Plus, you’re right by Rock Center if you want to make it a two-for-one adventure.
Chelsea Market Warmup
When those tiny fingers get too cold, Chelsea Market is your best friend. It’s like a treasure hunt in there during the holidays! Let the kids pick out a special treat (we love those mini doughnuts), and watch them practice their “please” and “thank you’s” with the vendors. Bonus: nice warm bathrooms.
Botanical Gardens Magic
The Holiday Train Show is worth the trek to the Bronx, seriously. The kids go nuts for the trains, and you get major bonus points with parents for the educational angle – those NYC landmarks made from plants are pretty incredible. Heads up: book your tickets in advance; it gets packed.
Columbus Circle Holiday Shopping
This market is just the right size for little legs. You can usually snag some really unique gifts, and the kids love helping pick things out for their parents. The hot apple cider stand is a must-stop – perfect for warming up those little hands.
Times Square (Yes, Really!)
I know, I know – Times Square sounds crazy during the holidays. But hit it at the right time (think early morning), and it’s actually pretty magical through a kid’s eyes. All those lights and sounds make for great sensory exploration, especially with the holiday decorations.
Making It Work
Listen, we’ve all had those outings that didn’t go as planned (meltdowns in FAO Schwarz, anyone?). But that’s why we love having a solid backup plan. Maybe it’s knowing which spots have the cleanest bathrooms, or where to grab a quick snack when hunger strikes.
The Real Deal
Here’s what makes it all worth it: watching a child experience these New York moments for the first time. Our city is pretty incredible during the holidays, and sharing that magic? Well, that’s what being a nanny is all about.
Remember, every kid is different – some might love the busy energy of Times Square, while others might prefer the quiet corners of the Botanical Gardens. The key is finding what works for your little crew and running with it. And hey, if all else fails, there’s always hot chocolate and people-watching at Bryant Park. Sometimes those end up being the best days of all.
