Must-Have Skills for Your Nanny Resume: Supercharge Your Childcare Career!

Creating a nanny resume that captures your whole experience and skillset can always be a challenge. Whether you’re a seasoned career nanny or just starting your journey, having a resume that shows what you can do can often make a big difference when landing your next nanny job. And one section of your resume you shouldn’t ignore? The skills section!

The skills section is a chance to highlight what makes you unique from other candidates. It can be listed in a small sidebar on the side of your resume or in a list after your jobs based on how you’ve set up the rest of your resume. We’ve collected some ideas about the best skills you can include on your resume to make yourself stand out:

1. Child Safety and First Aid:

It’s unsurprising that parents’ number one concern when they’re absent is their child’s safety. Having certifications in child safety and first aid is a fantastic addition to your resume. These certifications help parents feel more comfortable leaving their children with you as it shows that you’re ready to handle any emergencies that could come up while they’re gone. You can include your CPR and First-Aid certification, BLS certification, or even a lifeguard certification, especially if you’re in an area where children often go to the beach or swim.

2. Patience:

Let’s face it, kids can be challenging at times. Patience is an absolute must-have skill for any nanny. Remaining calm and composed in the face of tantrums, sibling squabbles, and messy meals will make you a superhero in the eyes of the parents.

3. Excellent Communication:

One of the top things we hear nannies request from their families is great communication. We’re going to let you in on an industry secret: This is one of the top requests from families as well! Being able to express yourself clearly, actively listen, and provide updates on the child’s progress is crucial for maintaining open and effective communication to build your relationship with your new employers.

4. Organization:

Nannies often juggle multiple responsibilities, from managing schedules to coordinating playdates and extracurricular activities. Listing organizational skills on your resume shows parents you can stay on top of everything and ensure that the little ones are always where they need to be when they need to be there.

5. Adaptable:

Life with children can be unpredictable, and being a nanny requires you to be flexible and adaptable. Parents love nannies who can go with the flow and adjust their plans when needed. Your ability to embrace change and handle unexpected situations with ease will make you an invaluable asset to any family.

6. Additional Languages:

While not every family is looking for a nanny who speaks a second language, if you do happen to speak any additional languages it can help your resume stand apart. Some families look for a nanny that can speak a specific second language, so having one on your resume could be your fast track to getting an interview.

7. Cooking/Nutrition:

Being a nanny means taking care of all aspects of the kiddo’s daily lives, including the food they eat! Families love to see that you have a background in a certain type of cooking or have studied nutrition, especially if you’re applying for a dual nanny and family assistant type of position where cooking is a main responsibility. Need some inspiration? Check out these quick, kid-approved recipes!

Crafting a nanny resume that highlights your must-have skills is key to standing out in the competitive world of childcare. By showcasing your special skills, you’ll be well on your way to becoming every family’s first choice for their nanny needs. So, go ahead, update that resume, and let your skills shine as you embark on your rewarding journey as a super nanny!
